 Oracle Maintenance Tasks

       Perhaps 80% of the DBA tasks are to maintain the database objects (to create objects, modify their attributes), allocate database resources for diffrents user groups, etc. In 11g more maintenance DBA tasks are automated, but that doesn't mean that the DBA role is less important.

        Automated maintenance tasks are tasks that are started automatically at regular intervals to perform maintenance operations on the database. For instance, a task that gathers statistics on schema objects for the query optimizer. Automated maintenance tasks run in maintenance windows, which are predefined time intervals that are intended to occur during a period of low system load (generally during the night time). You can customize maintenance windows based on the resource usage patterns of your database or disable certain default windows from running. You can also create your own maintenance windows. The "by default" maintenance window fits for the standard situations, but some businesses are atypical regarding the database workload. For example, during the day the workload can be low and during the night very havy. In such a case we need a maintenance window during the day.

       Oracle 11g database has three predefined automated maintenance tasks:

            - Automatic Optimizer Statistics Collection: Collects statistics for all schema objects (for the database optimizer)  for which there are no statistics or only stale statistics. The statistics gathered by this task are used by the SQL query optimizer to improve the performance of SQL execution;

            - Automatic Segment Advisor: Identifies segments that have space available and makes recommendations on how to defragment those segments;

            - Automatic SQL Tuning Advisor: Examines the performance of high-load SQL statements and makes recommendations on how to tune those statements. You can configure this advisor to automatically implement SQL profile recommendations.

       But not all the maintenance tasks can be automatically done. Sometimes we need to kill an Oracle process / jobs from OS, sometimes we need to create indexes on tables, sometimes we need to create partitions on indexes or tables, sometimes we need to create and manage Oracle jobs.

       There are a lot of Oracle maintenance tasks ... you will see ... and most likely you will enjoy it !   Good luck !
